Sticks and stones may break my bones, but a blister will not stop me

It can take a while to find the right running shoes that work for you. We are all different with different shaped feet and running style. Once I found my Nikes I have not looked back. I know a lot of people think they aren’t “proper” running shoes but I am happy to invite any one of these doubters to come and run with me. Whenever I slip me feet into my cushioned, bouncy, shoes I always feel like I am walking on clouds. And I don’t even get any blisters wearing them, no matter what the distance. My Nikes are my equivalent to a superhero cape.

Which is why I am more than annoyed that finding “normal” shoes is never that easy. I have been trying to find comfortable but classy (with a hint of sexy) summer shoes that I can wear both to work and also with jeans. And I found the perfect pair of wedges from Dune:

Incredibly comfortable to wear. Well, they were until I developed “new shoe blisters” on both of my pinky toes. No biggy – it happens, right? Except this time the blisters (one definitely, the other is heading that way) are infected. Whoopee doo! I ran to the gym yesterday, did my 1h 50mins there and didn’t really give two thoughts to the blisters but when I took my gym shoes off to change back into my running shoes… AUCH! The right pinky toe was red, swollen and very painful. I managed to hobble home and the toe kept getting worse. Trying to put on shoes after taking them off made me want to cry but I had to – the youngest needed to get home from school somehow. To top this off, the lymph nodes in my groin are swollen and very sore due to the infection as well. AND (sick of my whining yet?) I noticed this morning that because I was walking on the sore foot, trying to protect myself from the pain by keeping the foot in a funny angle, the outside of my calf is very stiff today. ALL THIS FROM A BLISTER! Darn you, pretty shoes!

I have a doctor’s appointment today for what I assume will be some antibiotics. Hopefully they will work fast as I have my 21km run tomorrow morning. Mind you – based on my experiments I think a handful of Neurofen should get me through that…

Edit: I was prescribed a week’s dose of antibiotics (penicillin) to be taken 4 times a day.. The doctor took it pretty seriously…

  1. Nasty stuff! I see lots of good runners out in NIkes here. In fact I saw a dude do a 34:00 10km in nikes today (he didn’t even have sports socks on – just socks that looked like the tops of pineapples!?!). Hope those antibiotics do the trick!

    1. I did it! 21km with buggered feet and actually faster that usual.. Maybe the meds are performance enhancers.. 🙂 definite proof that Nikes are most comfortable running shoes 🙂

      1. Well I actually live in Canada. I did my first marathon last year at age 52. It was on my bucket list and there was a very loud tick when I crossed the finish line. 🙂 Annie was very encouraging through the final months of training when I met her.

      2. I love how there are basically no limits as to where your friends live within the blogging community! And how running is this crazy passion that we all share. I would love to run a marathon distance (I won’t race so would do it on my “own time”) but so far 30km is the furthest I have run. Huge respect to you for ticking that item on your bucket list! Ultra next?… 😉

      3. Oh heavens no. As you there is no racing in my book. It was all about finishing. Truly one of the hardest things I have ever done. My body barely held together during training so definitely nothing further. That’s awesome that you are up to 30km!
Agree I love the connecting with people around the world!
